Scott Rocklage is a unique individual who has successfully combined the world of academia and entrepreneurship. Rocklage has always had a passion for science. In fact, he completed a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from the University of California.
Rocklage continued his education at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology where he received his PhD in Chemistry. Throughout his successful career, Dr. Rocklage has been able to combine his passion and expertise for chemistry with a prowess for entrepreneurship. In fact, he has accumulated over 20 years of healthcare management expertise at a multitude of companies.
Perhaps more impressively, he has seen the seal of approval for three U.S. New Drug Applications by the FDA. These three FDA approved drugs include Omniscan™, Teslascan® and Cubicin®. In addition, Dr. Rocklage has written over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications throughout his academic career. He has also been the co-inventor or inventor for 30 U.S. patents.
Dr. Scott Rocklage joined 5AM ventures in 2003 just as a Venture Partner. Within a year, Rocklage was already promoted to Managing Partner in 2004. Before joining 5AM ventures, Rocklage had gained a wealth of experience in the health management field. He was the President and CEO of Nycomed Salutar and Chairman and CEO of Cubist Pharmaceuticals.
At Nycomed Salutar, Rocklage held an R & D positions before becoming President and CEO. Rocklage’s vast knowledge and expertise in this field have seen him on the advisory boards for some prominent companies. He held position as Board Chairman for both Novira and Relypsa. Currently, Dr. Rocklage serves as Board Chairman for Kinestral, Cidara and Rennovia.
The focus of Dr. Scott Rocklage’s work is to enable entrepreneurs in the fields of medicine, science or otherwise to turn their ideas into functional medicines to help cure diseases. He has commented that the ability to target specific mutations within cancer therapy is an exciting advancement for him.
Dr. Rocklage has also commented that some of the most important components to his success include time management, prioritizing, and hiring the right individuals from the very beginning. He is also a proponent of measured risk-taking.
