George Soros is a billionaire. He is a self-made person. He is well-known for his investment skills. In addition, he is known for his philanthropic work too.

He was born in Budapest, Hungary. This was in 1930. He managed to survive Nazi occupation. This was because his father spent a large amount of money in getting false papers made for him and the other members of his family. George Soros also managed to survive in Hungary during the Communist rule over there. This was during the mid-1940s. He emigrated to London.

George Soros studied at the London School of Economics. Here he earned his degree in economics. In 1956, George Soros moved to New York City. He had plans to come back to London after earning a handsome amount of money. Basically, he did not wish to live in America. But this did not happen. He entered the world of finance in America, and there was no looking back. His highly renowned philanthropic efforts started in 1979. By 2012 his lifetime donations have amounted to over $7 billion. While studying at the London School of Economics, George Soros got highly interested in The Open Society and Its Enemies, Karl Popper. He was impressed by his philosophy and his critique of totalitarianism. He never studied under Popper directly, but he was highly impressed by his work. In 1956 George Soros sailed to New York. He took a job with the brokerage firm F.M. Mayer on Wall Street. He worked for some more firms after that. It was in 1973 that George Soros decided to set up his own hedge fund by the name of Soros Fund. Later it was renamed the Quantum Fund. After that, its name was changed to Quantum Fund Endowment. He started his firm with $12 million that he received from investors. This fund found massive success. George Soros was at its helm. The iterations managed to make George Soros the 21st person among the worlds’ richest. He was 85 years old at that time and having an estimated net worth that reached $26 billion.
